INTRODUCTION:
World Health Organization is a special agency of the United Nations that acts as a coordinating authority on international public health. Established in April 1948 and become a specialized agency on July 1948.

Objectives of World Health Organization:
The basic objectives of World Health Organization aimed at solving health problems of all peoples at highest possible level of health.

Function of World Health Organization:
In order to achieve its basic objectives the function of the Organization shall be summarized bellow:

  1. To direct and coordinate health within the United Nations system.
  2. To providing leadership on international public health matters.
  3. To setting norms and standards relating to global health matters.
  4. To stimulate and advance work to eradicate epidemic, epidemic and other diseases.
  5. To assist governments upon request in strengthening health service.
  6. To monitoring and assessing health trends.
  7. To promote co-operation among scientific and professional health research.
  8. To provides health service and facilities to special group such as the people of trust territories.

Membership of World Health Organization:
Membership of the World Health Organization is open to all States Members of the United Nations. States become members of the Organization by signing or accepting the Constitution of the Organization.


Governance structure:
The work of the Organization shall be carried out by:
  1. The World Health Assembly
  2. The Executive Board
  3. The Secretariat

1. The World Health Assembly:
The Assembly consists of 193 member states and each Member shall be represented by three delegates at the Assembly. It is the supreme decision-making body of the organization and meets annually at its headquarters in Geneva. Its main function is to determine the policies of the Organization. The Health Assembly appoints the Director-General on the nomination of the Executive Board and part of the CEB.

2. The Executive Board:
The Board shall consist of 34 persons among the Members state who are technically qualified in the field of health. They are elected by the Assembly for three year terms including three persons from established regional organizations. The Board shall meet at least twice a year. The main functions of the Board are to give effect to the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, to advise it and generally to facilitate its work.

3. The Secretariat:
The Secretariat shall be composed with the Director-General and other technical and administrative staff as the organization required. The Director-General shall be the chief technical and administrative officer of the organization.
